2014 Tractor Parade
{ SEPT. 20, 2014 • Parade Line-up: 10am • Parade Begins: Noon}
2014 Grand Marshal
Each
year, a tractor parade is held in the hamlet of Sidney Center
honoring the people and families of the farming community and
recognizing the importance of the farming industry and its history in
our county.
This
year, Dave Earl will be the parade’s Grand Marshal.
Dave
was born in Rock Royal, NY. In 1958, when Dave was 3 years old, his
father, Whitey Earl purchased a farm on Vandervort Hill in Sidney
Center from Edwin and Elizabeth Galley, comprised of 20 milk cows and
equipment. After about a year and a half, the Earl family returned
to Rock Royal where Dave attended a one room school. In 1962 the
family moved back to Sidney Center and purchased a 187 acre farm from
Henry and Fannie Underwood for $12,000. In 1964, Dave’s Dad
purchased another farm on Lawton Hill from John and Isabella
Ledgerwood.
Dave
met his wife, Kathie, in 1971. Kathie helped on the farm whenever
she wasn’t working at her job at the Hospital in Sidney. In 1976,
Dave and Kathie rented a farm from Ted & Elsie Stewart which is
still used today. Dave also hauled sawdust to other farmers for 34
years.
In
1987, Dave’s mother, Barbara Earl passed away. In 1997 his dad,
Whitey Earl passed.
In
2006, Dave and Kathie acquired the farm of Al and Naomi Adams
(Kathie’s parents). Today they own 85 head of cattle and 310 acres
of land. They also own 21 tractors – mostly John Deere - dating
from 1930 to 1983.
On
Saturday, September 20th,
as parade Grand Marshal, Dave will lead off the 5th annual Sidney
Center Tractor Parade. Dave will have many of his tractors in the
parade.
Registration
for parade entries begins at 10:00 AM at the firemen’s field in the
heart of the hamlet. Registration will end at 11:45 AM. The
parade, consisting of tractors, garden tractors, collectable cars,
Doodlebugs and other “cool stuff” will begin promptly at noon.
Entertainment, children activities, trophies, raffle prizes and a
delicious chicken BBQ will be available following the parade. For
